Hours later Tori led Mirry on a narrow track heading towards the river. She inhaled the scent of her first love, her horse Giddy Up. His musty earthy smell was so familiar to her. A smell she’d always loved, but today, her stomach churned as she controlled a cramp of nausea. Tori reached for the water bottle on the side of her pack and Giddy Up nuzzled her, demanding a pat. She swallowed the cool water and rubbed his nose. He’d always been an obedient and tame horse, but now with his advanced age he was perfect for Mirry.

This life was enough. Her future could be the farm, like Nan. After Pop had died her nan had lived a full and happy life alone. Yes, she’d had customers to care for and the hobby farm to keep her busy, but Tori could be the same. She’d help out more and make a serious effort to get the business off the ground and make a success of it. She’d provide for Mirry without the help of Todd, and her daughter could grow up a country kid like she had.

Thinking about men … Despite her self-talk, she couldn’t get Zac off her mind. Her belly tightened into knots remembering the words they’d exchanged. But then she recalled the kiss and her insides turned to liquid dissolving those same knots. Tori remembered the sensation; his thumb on her bare back, the feel of his body against her.

Shaking her head, she chased those thoughts away. It was the nostalgia of being home. That’s all. Zac was Cedar Creek Plains. The two went together.

Zac was the perfect friend, had always been there for her. They could continue being great friends.
